NORA does not provide homeownership loans or home buyer counseling, nor do we condemn nuisance properties; however, there are other resources available in New Orleans for those seeking home buying assistance or report and nuisance property. Below are just a few.
Code Enforcement

The Code Enforcement Department works to encourage recovery by making sure that neighborhoods are vibrant and safe. Code Enforcement handles complaints about nuisance properties. Generally, the Code Enforcement Department enforces housing standards. The department inspects all aspects of the property, including grass, debris, walls, roofs, driveways, sheds, porches and drainage. The Finance Authority of New Orleans (FANO)

In addition to financing home mortgages, The Finance Authority of New Orleans provides tax-exempt bond financing for public facilities, facilities owned by non-profits, multi-family housing and all forms of community & economic development. The Finance Authority programs are authorized by the New Orleans City Council.

LHFA specializes in forming partnerships with federal, state and local governmental units, banks, lending institutions and non-profit and for-profit developers to make housing affordable for Louisiana’s families. These partners utilize LHFA’s financial and technical assistance programs to reach out to the individual homeowner or renter.

NDF is a non-profit organization that helps people through the home buying process. The Foundation has been providing straight talk and sound advice to people who register in its homeownership programs. NDF implements this through training, counseling, and facilitating financing by lenders in the New Orleans banking industry.

NHS, founded in 1976, has been providing comprehensive services for first-time homebuyers and existing homeowners through counseling, classroom training, and construction management services.
Family Resources of New Orleans

Family Resources provides a twelve-hour homebuyer training curriculum in an effort to educate families on the homeownership process. The workshop covers a variety of topics such as; credit rehabilitation, family budgeting, mortgage products comparison and other aspects of homeownership from beginning to end. The classes are taught by professionals in the real estate industry. Family Resources also runs the Mutual Self Help Housing program where qualified individuals and families can build new homes. Families provide “sweat equity” by working to help build their home and the homes of others in their self help group. Financing is provided through the United States Dept. of Agriculture (USDA) with low interest loans to be repaid over 33 to 38 years.
